I have been teaching printmaking at the Learning Connection for the past 5 weeks and have been fascinated watching artist Sue Lund put up scaffolding and start to transform an old 60's styled building into a living work of art. I guess it must be like living inside a painted canvas for those on campus. Like it or not, you've got to admit the vast scale of the project is pretty impressive!
A water tank on the roof top sparkles with gold glitter in the sunshine and when it rains the colours glisten and come alive against a grey sky backdrop. The scene is a riot of colours and patterns jumping for attention. Yet there is order amongst chaos. Lund has developed an approach that is playful but systematic and after a few layers of paint, only she knows when enough paint has been applied and the work is finished. The building on the left of the photo is the last one on campus to be transformed into a Lund landscape. Walking around the campus the unsuspecting viewer may also be surprised by painted human mannequins popping out of chimneys or the facade of a building.
